Located twenty minutes from Center City Philadelphia, Chestnut Hill College provides a small school experience, and many big opportunities. Their close-knit community empowers each student to become a leader in all aspects of campus life. Their faculty and staff help each student achieve the right balance of academics, athletics, student life, and career development.

Business Challenge

Chestnut Hill College (CHC) has a legacy site built on Ektron - a great enterprise system, which they leverage for their content management.  However, they didn’t launch with a mobile/portable presence, and soon realized they needed to add mobile to better meet the usability needs of their mobile-savvy demographic market…college students.
CHC had looked at the research that indicates just how connected college students are to the web via their mobile device. An estimated 73% of college students use mobile phones.  They rely on their smartphones for a myriad of school-related activities - from studying and note taking, to registering for programs and scheduling classes. In order for marketers, service providers, etc., to better reach this constantly connected audience, their delivery efforts must include mobile.

With this knowledge, CHC wanted to move quickly to invest in and create a responsive web presence based on their existing site, which would automatically scale (‘respond’) to smaller screens and viewing mediums - like smartphones and tablets - without losing the established design and branding.

Responsive site design would allow CHC to communicate more effectively and efficiently with their audience by meeting users’ expectations, which would improve usability and aim to increase conversions.  One of CHC’s business objectives was making the forms for application and student registry available via mobile device, something they wanted to accomplish before the next registration period, which meant they needed to find a development partner who could execute in a timely manner.

Solution

CHC’s design agency reached out to MethodFactory for a fully responsive site. They had a number of distinct web templates to choose from and asked MethodFactory to help narrow down the templates, determining which would render the most efficiently.
MethodFactory took CHC’s current online presence and adapted it for mobile devices and portable use. MethodFactory was able to complete the project within the tight 5-6 week time frame, implementing a single responsive design with various break points to accommodate multiple form factors/devices such as tablets, and smartphones.
The result is that CHC’s web presence seamlessly and visually translates for different screen sizes and portable functionality and now accommodates remote scheduling, registration and new student recruitment; and was completed in time for the new semester.

CHC web users are now able to access all CHC web information from a single point of entry; whichever device they choose to use. This gives students and prospective students a congruent experience of CHC’s online presence, branding and communications.

From a back-end site management point of view, CHC’s marketing and communication staff only has to publish one set of content at a time for it to accurately populate/translate to the different mediums and screen sizes.
