Business Challenge

An increased focus on patient safety protocols in the medical industry has prompted an interest in simulation training using medical patient simulators. Simulation training has gained popularity because it is a highly effective tactic allowing healthcare professionals and students to practice critical lifesaving skills in a risk-free environment.  HealthStream joined forces with Laerdal Medical, makers of the patient simulator, SimMan to create SimCenter – an innovative simulation management platform designed specifically for healthcare institutions to generate and manage their simulation initiatives.

The two companies envisioned an online portal where educators and instructors could access the latest in simulation curriculum for their students and other healthcare trainees. It would include an eCommerce storefront where courses, learning materials, simulations, and other software elements could be purchased and downloaded.  Another big component would be a mechanism for developers of the simulation scenarios and other curriculum to submit new products, and a way to review, approve and manage the content.

Their collaboration required partnering with an expert in online commerce solutions to co-develop the commerce server applications and deliver it to the medical industry within an accelerated timeframe -to meet the deadline of their International Meeting on Simulation in Healthcare (IMSH) Conference.

MethodFactory was chosen by HealthStream and Laerdal because of their eCommerce expertise.  The three worked in a co-development capacity to build SimCenter – an online simulation management platform for healthcare training. SimCenter consists of three separate websites:

  • SimStore - an online storefront where healthcare providers and educators can sample and purchase simulation content/scenarios for their simulation training activities, such as PDFs, documents, training, instruction manuals and simulations.
  • SimDeveloper - a mechanism for developers at leading healthcare organizations to submit/upload new products and content for peer review, pricing, and terms and conditions.
  • SimAdmin – a site for HealthStream/Laerdal to manage content by reviewing, approving, editing and retiring the uploaded products.

SimCenter utilizes some of the latest technology in its applications: It employs a Digital Rights Management (DRM) model so that content is used within the established simulation usage policies (i.e. licensing);  the platform also utilizes Single Sign On (SSO) functionality so that authorized/registered users only need to log on once in a single location to be able to access other sites/locations within SimCenter; SimStore has an SEO-based category search with dynamic filtering; and MethodFactory developed custom commerce server pipelines to make sure it would work many other countries - allowing for content to load in different languages and multi-currencies, as well as for online sales to be routed through local channels/offices.

MethodFactory continues to work with HealthStream and Laerdal on SimCenter enhancements, providing ongoing support of their business needs.
