MethodFactory developed a new B2B website with an eCommerce platform for IDEC Corporation, a global manufacturer of automation system control devices, components and equipment, to better serve their distributors’ needs.  The site was created using Commerce server and MethodFactory’s commerce extension tools to leverage sales potential and improve operations.

Client Background

Headquartered in Osaka, Japan, IDEC Corporation is a global manufacturer known for its reliable control devices and systems, factory automation system components and equipment, peripheral control components, explosion-proof products, and other electrical devices.  Since 1947, IDEC has been developing safe, high-quality and innovative products, becoming a leader in the industry.  A company on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, IDEC employs over 1,600 people, with offices in the US and Canada as well as Germany, UK, Australia, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore. IDEC has over 200 distributors in the US alone to assist customers with choosing the right switches, relays, power supplies, PLCs, OI Touchscreens, sensors and more for their manufacturing needs.


IDEC was working off of a first-generation Web content management system and product catalog that was no longer serving their needs.  The design was outdated, it was not easy to use, and they were not using the eCommerce functionality.  It was difficult to offer updated inventories, a dynamic distributor locator and a Request for Quote function – resulting in lost leads.  Sales had to be placed through distribution channel partners, and often IDEC products were integrated into offerings by other companies.  In the event that the customer needed to place a small order, or find a specific replacement part, they often had no choice but to go through these rigid distribution channels.  They needed a flexible solution that would provide a vehicle for direct sales for both B2B and B2C orders with real-time ERP integration.

IDEC sought the expertise of MethodFactory to create solutions to these challenges and to open up new channels for sales and product fulfillment.  It was decided they not only wanted to replace their existing website with a new design and new functionality, but they would also need an eCommerce platform for distributors and customers to buy directly, 24/7.


MethodFactory created two websites for IDEC, IDEC.com and automationandbeyond.com, using Microsoft Commerce Server and MethodFactory’s Admin Extender tool.  MethodFactory implemented a new, modern graphic design, intuitive navigation and guided search for IDEC.com - their public facing website and product catalog.  IDEC.com’s customers can create a “Product List” as well as request a quote.  The site’s built-in distributor locator and lead capture with routing functionality, provide the ability to better obtain and respond to requests.  Through its integration with Salesforce.com, quotes are communicated directly to a sales team to follow up on.  Customers, prospects, distributors, and engineers can go to IDEC.com to get detailed product information including datasheets, specs, inventory, SKU’s, and pricing. 
The sister site, automationandbeyond.com is IDEC’s eCommerce platform, which allows distributors and customers to buy direct 24/7.  Both websites have guided navigation and modern filter/search functionality that enables buyers to easily find the products they want.

Like IDEC.com, automationandbeyond.com has real-time integration with Microsoft-NAV and Salesforce.com CRM.  MethodFactory’s Admin Extender is leveraged by IDEC’s Product Marketing and Product Engineering Staff to manage marketing content, reference documents, product images, and more.  Both websites are more intuitive and modern, improving the user experience and increasing overall efficiency and sales conversion rates.
Currently IDEC’s online presence is targeted at the United States and Canadian markets, but in the future will have a global presence by leveraging the same commerce engine/environment in English speaking countries worldwide.
