The Coleman Company, Inc. is an international leader in the innovation of outdoor products and gear meant to enhance the great outdoor experience.  Since 1900, Coleman name has become synonymous with camping and trekking.  Their legendary lanterns, stoves, coolers, tents, sleeping bags, airbeds, backpacks, furniture, and grills are all designed to help people have fun and make memories by providing the gear integral to their favorite outdoor experiences. Additionally, Coleman provides flotation devices, towables, rainwear, waders, hunting and fishing gear as well as safety and survival equipment under its Stearns®, Sevylor®, Sospenders®, Hodgman®, Mad Dog Gear®, Helium® and Aerobed® brands. Headquartered in Wichita, Kan., Coleman is a wholly owned subsidiary of Jarden Corporation.

Business Challenge

Coleman was looking for a partner with extensive experience in WCM and eCommerce with CPG manufacturing clients.  Although Coleman didn't have a specific plan, they knew it was time to modernize their customer engagement platform by implementing a solution that was easy to administer, without limiting their ability to offer modern personalized visitor engagement.

The old site didn’t have many of the features and functionality that online shoppers expect today, like the ability to filter products to narrow a search. And with a name like Coleman, it was important to make the website meet the brand’s image and reputation of providing innovative, durable, and dependable camping gear that people have been relying on for decades.

Coleman prides itself on being “America’s original campsite,” referring to their “original social network” around camping and Coleman products.  It was important for the new website to continue to serve this thriving online community by offering the latest in social media links and plugins, including Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter.

Solution

Based on a careful analysis of Coleman's requirements, MethodFactory implemented Commerce Server 2009 (now Sitecore Commerce) and Ektron (now EPiServer) Content Management System.

MethodFactory employed a best-of-breed approach to leverage existing systems and speed time to market.  Several aspects of the site required custom development, including design and development of the proprietary Tent Finder, which allows the customer to filter by a number of criteria - like number of sleepers, number of rooms, floor size, tent weight, etc.  

Back-end functionality is administered using BizTalk integration into SAP (Coleman’s ERP system).  Product catalog information, pricing, tax, inventory, credit card processing, shipping, fulfillment, and customer/order management is all coordinated using OOB tools (and custom integration - when required), to deliver a seamless end-to-end experience.
