Coleman Canada Coleman Canada is the latest in a series of site releases for subsidiaries of Coleman global, thanks to MethodFactory’s Prescriptive Architecture, which gives business units (country and/or brand specific) the ability to consolidate, update and refresh their websites efficiently and effectively.

Company Background

The Coleman Company, Inc. is an international leader in the innovation of outdoor products and gear meant to enhance the great outdoor experience.  Since 1900, Coleman name has become synonymous with camping and trekking.  Their legendary lanterns, stoves, coolers, tents, sleeping bags, airbeds, backpacks, furniture, and grills are all designed to help people have fun and make memories by providing the gear integral to their favorite outdoor experiences. Additionally, Coleman provides flotation devices, towables, rainwear, waders, hunting and fishing gear as well as safety and survival equipment under other brands. Headquartered in Denver, CO, Coleman is a wholly owned subsidiary of Jarden Corporation.

Challenge

Coleman’s global presidents gathered at corporate headquarters in Denver, CO at the beginning of the year for their annual week-long, year kick-off.  eCommerce was on the agenda because a number of Coleman division presidents are interested in implementing catalog and commerce sites. Coleman US presented on the benefits of their new site that was deployed by MethodFactory last year.  As a result of this presentation and website demo, Coleman Canada’s president became interested in implementing the same type of online presence with similar functionality to that of Coleman US.

Coleman Canada's president wanted something fast and economically feasible.  He liked the entire platform and the idea that he could roll out a similar site fast and inexpensively because of the template that was already built for Coleman US.  Quick time to value was such an important factor, in part because Coleman Canada’s retail season was coming up, so they quickly moved on getting capital expenditure approved to move forward with the project.

The overall goals of Coleman Canada’s new web initiative included an update to the graphic design, a more modern site with dynamic navigation, and improved user experience.  Another high priority was the ability for Coleman Canada staff to self-administer content changes to the site.  In the past this had been cumbersome and time-consuming. They previously had to submit a work ticket to the technical support staff in Wichita, Kansas for even the most minor content changes.  Another major consideration was that the site had to be bilingual (English and French), under Canada’s Official Bilingualism, mandating that goods and services need to be accessible in both languages.

Solution

Coleman Canada is the latest in a series of site releases for subsidiaries of Coleman global, thanks to MethodFactory’s Prescriptive Architecture, which gives business units (country and/or brand specific) the ability to consolidate, update and refresh their websites efficiently and effectively at a fraction of the cost. By using a multi-tenant approach based on a parent template and leveraging what’s already been invested in and developed, business units can employ and enjoy a consistent message, brand and user experience.
MethodFactory provided a considerations worksheet to help Coleman Canada identify their goals and define their phase one requirements. Coleman Canada liked what MethodFactory could provide within the preliminary budget and timeline, and the project became one of the fastest to complete, from decision to deployment.

MethodFactory architected the catalog site for Coleman Canada, using Admin Extender, MethodFactory’s catalog management software that is designed to extend Commerce Server functionality.

MethodFactory also provided a project portal to Coleman Canada to ensure that all aspects were maintained and visible to the stakeholders throughout the project; from roles and responsibilities to delivery dates and status updates.

Now Coleman Canada has a freshly designed, modern and intuitive site, which can be easily managed by non-technical users; products and content can be added, removed and updated on the fly.  Brand consistency and better user experience have been accomplished, and through Ektron CMS, it meets the multi-lingual requirements.  The entire phase one of the project was delivered on time and on budget, as per spec and Coleman Canada is very happy with their new site.
