Coleman Australia saw the success of the Coleman US catalog and commerce website, which was built by MethodFactory using Prescriptive Architecture for Coleman and related brands.  Coleman Australia was interested in implementing the same type of online presence with similar functionality and using MethodFactory’s Site Builder, which would allow them to spin up a site clone for less cost and in a faster turn-around time.

As an international leader in the innovation and marketing of outdoor products, The Coleman Company, Inc., helps people have fun and make memories by providing the gear integral to their favorite outdoor experiences. The company’s products include its legendary lanterns and stoves, as well as coolers, tents, sleeping bags, airbeds, backpacks, furniture, and grills under the Coleman® brand. Additionally, the company provides flotation devices, towables, rainwear and airbeds as well as safety and survival equipment under its Stearns®, Sevylor®, Sospenders®, Helium® and Aerobed® brands. Business Challenge 

Coleman Australia saw the success of the Coleman US catalog and commerce website, which was built by MethodFactory using Prescriptive Architecture for Coleman and related brands.  Coleman Australia was interested in implementing the same type of online presence with similar functionality and using MethodFactory’s Site Builder, which would allow them to spin up a site clone for less cost and in a faster turn-around time.

Most of the site would be like the Coleman US site in terms of the structure, taxonomy, layout, etc., but they needed some things to be configured differently to accommodate their ERP system, Australia’s shipping requirements, taxes, etc.

Like Coleman US, the overall goals of Coleman Australia’s new web initiative included an update to the graphic design, a more modern site with dynamic navigation, and improved user experience. Another high priority was the ability for Coleman Australia staff to self-administer content changes to the site. In the past this had been cumbersome and time-consuming. They previously had to submit a work ticket to the technical support staff for even the most minor content changes.

Another unique need Coleman Australia had was to be able to extend the site to the four separate brands it manages (Coleman, Sevylor, Aerobed, and Esky). They needed to represent all four brands on their site, but in a way for each brand to maintain its own identity within the site structure. This means different graphics, layouts, standards, etc.  And it had to be set up so it could be easily managed and maintained by non-technical staff.

Solution 

Coleman Australia is the first site within the Coleman structure to use Site Builder; a set of scripts that automates deployment of product catalog or eCommerce sites off of the Prescriptive Architecture, launching full catalog or eCommerce sites within weeks versus months.

While the parent template for the site was already configured, Coleman Australia needed some added features and customization. MethodFactory integrated with their back office ERP system, which is different from the one Coleman US uses, because of Australia shipping differences and requirements. A different taxing mechanism was needed to deal with duty and their country’s goods and services tax. Additionally, it was configured for them to toggle between Australia shipping and US shipping.

Because Coleman Australia manages the Coleman product line along with three other name brands, MethodFactory created ‘brand-theming,’ a theme-based presentation model within Ektron. Their single-site Ektron environment is configured to present all four brand themes based upon the URL. MethodFactory created a smart form with the ability to inherit the theme from a cookie (yes/no), and all associated branding files (CSS, .JS, assets, etc.), and created a number of app settings that are stored in a smart form library.  Those settings include theme cookie information, caching information and routing information.

The result of this enhancement is the empowerment of content administrators to extend beyond the initial website brand.  This is an elegant and simple way to extend the value of a well-designed information architecture and well-structured master page Now, Coleman Australia has a freshly designed, modern and intuitive site, which can be easily managed by non-technical users; products and content can be added, removed and updated on the fly.  Brand consistency and better user experience have been accomplished.
